Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a reception at the Armenian Embassy in Ottawa to honour the 2022 Aurora Prize Laureate, Jamila Afghani.
As an educator, human rights defender, and founder of the Noor Educational and Capacity Development Organization, Jamila has dedicated her life to defending women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Her organisation had over 100,000 women enrolled in literacy programs and provided legal and psychosocial support to over 10,000 women suffering from domestic abuse.
Despite the Taliban takeover in August 2021, which forced Jamila to flee Afghanistan, she remains unbowed and continues her vital work from Canada
