Mental health of young Lavallers

The City of Laval and the Center Intégré de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) de Laval are today releasing the  2020 Sociodemographic and Health Portrait of Laval youth aged 0 to 17 . This document is the result of an extensive collaborative process involving a working committee of community and institutional partners from Laval's youth community.

The social adaptation and mental health of young people present certain challenges. Nearly four out of 10 high school students (38.4%) have experienced at least one form of psychological, physical or sexual violence in their relationships, and about three out of 10 high school students (30.2%) have a high level of psychological distress.

Adolescence alone causes high levels of psychological distress, and the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified mental health struggles among our youth. Talk to your children, and let them know that having mental health issues are not only okay, but common and normal. COVID-19 Update

Last week, we passed a tragic milestone: over 1 million Canadians have tested positive for COVID-19. This serves as a reminder to everyone that the fight is not over. The third wave is upon us, and it is an entirely new pandemic with a deadlier, more contagious virus. Laval remains a red zon e , and the situation continues to be critical. Nicer weather is here, but we must continue to follow all public health measures and avoid indoor gatherings.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our essential workers. From healthcare workers like doctors and nurses to local bus drivers and grocery store workers, you have gone above and beyond to support Canadians and their families, often making the sacrifice of working longer hours to keep us safe and healthy. You are truly our frontline heroes and from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much.

So far, the government has distributed over 10 million doses of vaccines to the provinces and territories, 2.32 million of which to Quebec. 6.63 million have been administered nationally, and Quebec has administered more than 1.5 million doses. For more information on the status of the vaccination campaign in Canada, please click  her e.

I got my first dose as soon as I was eligible, and I urge everyone to get theirs when they are eligible. It is safe, effective and painless, and is our best chance to conquer the virus and return to our normal lives.

Beginning of automatic garbage pick-up

During the week of March 22, 2021, the City completed the roll-out of black bins to all 130,000 single-family homes and buildings with 7 or fewer units. Along with the blue and brown bins already provided, the black bins complete the trio for the automated collection that will begin on April 1. The black bin becomes the only container accepted for curbside waste.

In order to allow Laval residents to continue to dispose of waste that is too large to be placed in the black bin, a new bulky waste collection will also begin in April 2021. Each month, this collection will be made by truck the day before the black bin collection day (last full week of the month). Exceptionally, in 2021, 6 additional collections will be offered.

To find out the day of the collections by sector, consult the schedule collection.

Carbon Tax

Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that pollution pricing is constitutional and critical to our response to climate change as an existential threat to human life in Canada and around the world. A national price on pollution is helping us protect our environmental and meet our climate targets, and it is a central part of our strengthened climate plan to create jobs, grow the middle class, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
